Lab Rat
Hatch Escapes
1919 3rd Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90018, USA
2-8 players
Duration: 90 minutes

Ratkenstein, a slightly unhinged doctoral student in the field of human intelligence (or, in his estimation, the lack thereof), has tasked you with completing a series of tests and puzzles. If you succeed, he can finally write his dissertation. If you fail, he’s going to put you and your friends in the old test-subject chipper (like a wood chipper, but for test subjects!). You’ll have one hour to complete the tests and attempt to get out of the laboratory for good, or Ratkenstein will turn you into mulch! This is a large and challenging room. We recommend groups of at least 4 players (though a few couples whose bond is particularly strong have been known to succeed).

One of the most unique escape rooms I’ve ever done. Very immersive and high production value. Some interesting puzzles. To me, it was more like an interactive storytelling.

This is the full package! Hatch really thinks about the whole experience from start to fish and the production value in this room is through the roof. The story is very well thought out, the room is fully immersive, the puzzles are varied and on theme, and the whole experience is tons of fun. It’s a big space with some really fun props. My only mild issue with this room is that there is a constant voiceover that gives you hints throughout and guides you along, so you don’t feel as accomplished in the end. However, this does ensure that everyone finishes (or at least gets close to the end) which I appreciate, and given the size of the space and the quantity of puzzles, I think it would be too hard to finish without the extra handholding, so I see why they do it this way. All in all a really fun, well designed room that’s bound to be a sure hit with everyone.

Summary: Very immersive and excellent production! Puzzles were unique and thematic. Puzzles: Moderately difficult and unique puzzles that blended into the environment. Puzzles were mostly thinky, with some interesting physical and social elements Immersion: One of the most immersive rooms I've done and great production value! You really do get the feeling you're in a rat maze, and there were a lot of nice touches in the set design that made me laugh. Execution: Everything flowed very smoothly, there was only one tiny glitch where one person saw something they weren't supposed to see yet, and the game master had to tell them to stop talking about it. Group size: Our group was 6 experienced people, but it would probably be better with 3-4. Some moments in the game were too crowded for 6.
